Visual Communications

If you have ever wanted to do Art and make a living at it the Visual Communications program at Stanwood High School is for you.  The program provides students the opportunity to develop skills in the areas of Graphic Arts and Photography.  These are industry recognized skills that utilize the latest software, techniques, and equipment.  Through hands on projects, students are able to put their skills to work in real world applications.  
Many of these courses can be used to meet the  Fine Arts Requirements for Graduation and College Admission.  
Additionally courses with a  logo allow students to earn FREE college credits.

AP Art is recommended for students who are interested in developing a portfolio for scholarship competition and college admission. Intended for the highly motivated student who is willing to devote considerable time and effort building a significant body of work for submission to the Advanced Placement Portfolio Exam. Students are responsible for the cost of specialized art materials and AP Exam fee.
 
PHOTOGRAPHY I

In Photography 1, students take photos for their own projects and the school yearbook. In addition, they process digital images for high-quality printing. A major emphasis of the class is operating a manual SLR digital camera, using different lenses. Topics include exposure, camera handling, photo composition and digital concepts. Other topics will include developing marketing and customer service skills, selection of cameras and exploring different career options where photographic skills can be used. During class, students work with cameras, read Photography articles, e-text chapters and reference material, create slideshows, and participate in classroom learning activities. This is not “point and shoot” class, but rather a class where photography is studied from both a technical and an artistic standpoint. ***A similar course, Photojournalism, is offered in the Business Ed Section.

Prerequisite: Photography I
Required:  $20.00 Lab Fee
Students further refine the skills learned in Photography 1, and explore visual communications and photography as a possible career path in more detail. Students use Photoshop more extensively to produce finished projects. A Digital SLR digital camera is required for this class. Students must also be available for out-of-class assignments to take photos at school events after school and in the evening. Students must pay for supplies when working on independent projects.
 
YEARBOOK

Produce The Spartan Epic Yearbook using OnDesign 3 and Adobe Photoshop. Learn publication skills, interviewing, writing feature stories, designing layouts and taking photographs. The class produces The Spartan Epic and uses a variety of student talents including writing, editing, designing, selling and managing. Students must be willing to work occasionally on their yearbook assignments after school and at home to meet deadlines.
 
JOURNALISM

Prerequisite:  None
Learn the fundamentals of newspaper design, organization, and ethics while helping to produce the online version of the school newspaper, the Spartan Spectrum. Students will gain valuable experience in interviewing techniques, writing news stories, working with photos, selling advertising, and what it takes to produce an online paper.  As students gain the skills to write in a journalistic style, articles will be submitted to the editors of Spartan Spectrum for publication. An interest in writing and a basic knowledge of computer skills are highly recommended. Students may be required occasionally to work outside of school hours to cover important stories.

PHOTOJOURNALISM I

This course is a combination of technical knowledge, artistic presentation, and the practical application of photography skills in a Journalism setting. Students will gain practical experience shooting events for the Spartan Scenes website. Although most coursework will be completed during class, students will be required to attend one event outside of the school day each semester (athletic events, club activities, art/music/drama related events). Topics include equipment selection, camera operation, lighting, exposure, night photography, and the theory of Black & White photography. Elements of Art (color, composition, and perspective) will be explored.  Students will work with industry-standard photo editing software, Photoshop.

PHOTOJOURNALISM II

Prerequisite: Photojournalism I or instructor recommendation

Students will further their Photojournalism skills and explore photography and Photoshop in more detail.  They should have a strong interest in photography and the ability to work independently.  Students will gain practical experience in the industry by shooting events for the Spartan Scenes website. Students will create a photographic portfolio and have the opportunity to create and submit an AP Studio Art project.
